 | | | | | | Ocean Science Education Programs CORE's mission is to advance knowledge and learning in the ocean sciences and to disseminate this knowledge within the scientific community and to the public. Within this framework, CORE’s educational focus is three-fold: (1) to develop and manage national programs that promote marine science in formal and informal education, (2) to collect and disseminate data on marine educational programs in the United States, and (3) to facilitate collaboration and partnerships among different sectors of the marine science and education communities.
The cornerstone of CORE's K-12 education activities is the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). The NOSB provides an educational venue for students to excel in math and science and receive national recognition for their efforts and talents. Since the program’s start in 1998, NOSB has developed into a multi-faceted program that fosters collegiality, teamwork and critical thinking as well as competition and factual recollection. The program also provides our nation's teachers with tools to capture the imagination of their students and infuse high school science courses with exciting real-world examples of scientific discovery in the oceans.
CORE's mission is to advance knowledge and learning in the ocean sciences and to disseminate this knowledge within the scientific community and to the public. CORE also serves as the Central Coordinating Office for the Centers for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE) program established by the National Science Foundation in 2002. Working with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, University of South Carolina’s Office of Program Evaluation and NOAA’s National Sea Grant Office, the CCO provides national coordination and leadership for the seven Centers in the COSEE national network. Serving a broad spectrum of educational audiences, the Network aims to (1) promote catalytic, multi-dimensional partnerships between ocean science researchers and educators; (2) improve communication and coordination among ocean science education programs nationwide; (3) position ocean education as a vehicle for enriching science education in the 21st century; and (4) foster a deeper public understanding of the ocean.
In addition to the day-to-day management of these educational programs and projects, CORE staff members serve as liaisons between different sectors of the marine research and marine education communities. The educational pages of this website provide information on the educational programs and activities coordinated by CORE as well as opportunities offered by consortium members. The education section of the ‘links page’ provides access to other organizations and on-line resources that focus on marine science education and advance the public's understanding of the ocean sciences. | | |
