Research Programs
Knowledge of processes and patterns in the oceans is fundamental to understanding how the marine environment interacts with the rest of the planet. This knowledge can only be gathered through oceanographic research, and CORE's member institutions represent the leading research institutions. The theories tested and data collected by CORE members will be crucial to our nation as we move through the 21st century. We rely on ocean research to manage living and non-living marine resources in a sustainable and effective way, ensure national security without compromising ecosystem protections, and minimize the human impacts of natural hazards ranging from hurricanes and tsunamis to coastal erosion and global climate change.
CORE’s basic research goal is to facilitate ongoing ocean research programs and foster new ocean research investments by public, private and government institutions.
At present, scientists and others routinely collect information about the ocean that can be used to mathematically describe and, ultimately, predict ocean processes; however, such measurements are very limited in both coverage and number. Thus one priority for CORE is implementation of an integrated and sustained observing system both in the US coastal waters and throughout the world's oceans. But observations alone will not solve problems and must be translated into information that can be used by resource managers, policy-makers, industry, environmental groups, educators, and the general public to serve diverse needs.
CORE’s basic research goal is to facilitate ongoing ocean research programs and foster new ocean research investments by public, private and government institutions. CORE also works directly with government and private sources to provide programmatic support for oceanographic research.
