National Ocean Scholar Program
What is the National Ocean Scholar Program?
As part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB®) program’s continuing effort to recognize individual achievement as part of the NOSB® program, the Consortium for Ocean Leadership offers the National Ocean Scholar Program. This scholarship program is to provide tuition assistance for NOSB® students who have an interest in pursuing an ocean or a marine related topic area in their post-high school education. Scholars will receive $3,000 a year for the first two years of undergraduate studies, totaling $6,000.
Applicants must have participated in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl at least once in their high school career, have a career goal in an ocean science or marine-related career, demonstrated academic success in high school and be scheduled to graduate in the spring of the application year. The National Ocean Scholar Program does not discriminate on the basis of gender, religion or race.
Criteria for the National Ocean Scholar Program
All applicants for the National Ocean Scholar Program must meet the following requirements:
Participation in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl at least once during their high school career
A career goal in the ocean sciences or a marine-related field
Although the National Ocean Scholar Program does not have minimum requirements for SAT/ACT scores or GPA, applicants must be able to demonstrate academic success and integrity throughout their high school career
Scheduled high school graduation date in spring of application year
Application Process for the National Ocean Scholar Program
Qualified students are required to submit the following materials:
Completed Application Form
Official High School Transcript(s)
Official score sheet from either the SAT or the ACT
Essays: A 500-word essay related to the ocean sciences and a 250-word essay describing inspiration and expected relevant coursework.
Two (2) Recommendation Letters [One must be from an academic source (teacher, coach, etc.)]
Proof of admission to an institution of higher learning (if available at this time).
Completed applications must postmarked by April 11th, 2008 in order to be considered. All documents should be sent to the Consortium for Ocean Leadership offices in Washington, DC at the address below.

Decisions will be made by June 2, 2008 and all applicants will be contacted whether or not they receive funding. Funding is dependent upon admission of an institution of higher learning.
